Shadows & Light (Interior)

Preecha Thaothong, National Artist of Thailand in Painting, captured a similar sense of transition in his work β€œπ™Žπ™π™–π™™π™€π™¬π™¨ & π™‡π™žπ™œπ™π™© (π™„π™£π™©π™šπ™§π™žπ™€π™§)” (1979). The painting shows beams of light casting across the mural walls of a temple, where rows of celestial beings appear in prayer and music. The interplay of shadow and brightness is more than an optical effect; it bridges worlds, intertwining the sacred and the earthly, the timeless and the present.

The motif of light and shadow also recalls the Buddha’s miraculous act on this very day β€” when he opened the three realms, allowing humans, heavenly beings, and even the inhabitants of hell to behold one another. With the radiance of his presence, even the deepest darkness of Avici hell was momentarily illuminated. In this sense, the rhythm of light in Preecha’s work resonates with the power of revelation, connection, and liberation across all realms of existence.
